While gas remains a crucial transitional fuel, regional electricity interconnections such as the Pan-Arab Electricity Market (PAEM) and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) power grid are laying the groundwork for enhanced energy security and market efficiency. The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is at a pivotal moment in its energy journey. In 2024, it supplied over 30% of the world's oil and nearly 20% of its natural gas. The Middle East is entering a new era of surging electricity demand; one marked not just by rapid growth, but by rising complexity. Fuelled by population expansion, industrial diversification and the rise of digital infrastructure, the region's power systems must evolve faster to meet ambitious. ENGIE has extended its presence in Oman by signing new 15-year PPAs for Barka 3 and Sohar 2, ensuring continued reliable power supply and supporting the country's energy needs from 2028 onward, while reinforcing long-term partnerships, maintaining operational excellence, and contributing to grid. transition as climate change, and energy security concerns took center hold in 2022. Extreme weather events and geo-political events highlight the need to redu technology hub rather than remain reliant only on petroleum exploration and export.
